Contrasts & Contradictions
As I read an excert from The Watsons go to Birmingham, I noticed a change in Byron, one of the main characters. Byron and his brother, Kenny, were eating creme cookies, and Byron got the idea to throw a cookie at a nearby bird sitting on a telephone wire, but seemed disgusted by himself when he hit the bird straight in the chest, killing it. Byron is a mean boy, so if he was throwing a cookie at a bird, he was shooting to kill. If Byron was trying to kill the bird, he should be happy when he hits it square in the chest. So if he would've been happy to see the little bird die, why would he make a grave for it and vomit because of his own stupidity? I think that maybe Byron did this because he never realized that his actions had consequences, and effect lives, even if it is just a bird. Even though Byron can be mean, that doesn't mean he can't feel bad when he kills a bird. Maybe, Byron only threw the cookie because that's what people expected; the worst. People have grown accustomed to him throwing and killing things, and Byron is too shy to let out his true feelings and not be a mean, cookie-throwing person.
